Despite spirited attempts to save Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola Virus Disease in the United States, has died.

Duncan, 42, died on Wednesday at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas. He had been on dialysis and Brincidofovir, an experimental drug after his condition became critical earlier in the week.

According to the World Health Organisation, the EVD has infected more than 7,000 people in the latest outbreak and killed 3,400 people, majority of them in West Africa.

The hospital, in a statement announcing the death, said, “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7.51 a.m. Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola.

“He fought courageously in this battle. Our professionals, the doctors and nurses in the unit, as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing. We have offered the family our support and condolences at this difficult time.’’

Duncan, who worked as a driver for a courier company, tested positive in Dallas, Texas, on September 30, 10 days after arriving on a flight from Monrovia, Liberia, via Brussels.

He became ill a few days after arriving in the US.

Four days later, he was placed in isolation but his condition continued to deteriorate.

Ten people the deceased came into contact with are being monitored for symptoms.
