Pope to baptise father of S’Korean ferry disaster victim
The Vatican spokesman said on Friday in Daejeon (South Korea), that the South Korean man who lost his son in a major shipwreck earlier this year has decided to convert to Catholicism.
Father Federico Lombardi said that, 62-year-old, Francis Ho-Jin, has asked to be baptised by Pope Francis.
He said he would be baptized on Saturday in the morning at the Vatican embassy.
Ho-Jin, 62, along with around a dozen others lost their loved ones to the ferry sinking.
The Sewol ferry sank on April 16, claiming more than 300 lives.
Families of the victims have been campaigning for an independent investigation into the probe, amid allegations that corrupt officials turned a blind eye to lapses in safety protocols.
Pope Francis has been urged to support their cause, which has attracted widespread public support.
Jung Sook, the mother of another victim, posted in an open letter to Pope that “Please wipe away our tears and hear our stories.
The pontiff mentioned the “great national tragedy” in his stadium mass.
“May the Lord welcome the dead into his peace, console those who mourn, and continue to sustain those who so generously came to the aid of their brothers and sisters,”he said.
