I’m still consulting on my political future – Speaker Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has said he is holding wide consultations before deciding on his political future.

He stated this on Sunday while fielding question from journalists in his home town in Sokoto State after collecting his permanent voter’s card, PVC.

Mr. Tambuwal, although a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is believed to harbour plans to defect to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

There are also speculations that the Speaker is planning to run for president or governor of his home state of Sokotoon the platform of the APC.

Only two weeks ago, posters pairing him and his deputy, Emeka Ihedioha as presidential and vice presidential candidates flooded the streets of Abuja. Both men have since disowned the posters.

Mr. Tambuwal said he would return to his constituents at the appropriate time before taking a stand on his political direction.

“I am still consulting my primary constituency on these crucial matters that affect me. I will come back and engage my people and then make my final stand on the issues known to Nigerians at the most appropriate time. All politics is local,” he said.

The Speaker said the country needs better leadership in order to defend its democracy.

He said, “Nigeria deserves better leadership and the nation’s leaders, as well as other Nigerians must work to defend the hard-earned democracy in the country.”

He expressed joy over the peaceful and successful conduct of the distribution of permanent voter card exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

He commended the Commission for managing elections in the face of inadequate power supply and ICT infrastructure.

Mr. Tambuwal said he was happy for obtaining his card, saying “I feel happy as a patriotic citizen of Nigeria to have collected my card today and all Nigerians must diligently exercise their civic duties.”

The Speaker who said INEC had been put on first line charge with a view to making it financially independent, however, challenged the Commission to “exert her independence in action and not only on paper”.

According to him, the action was aimed at making it improve on its performance.

Mr. Tambuwal also disclosed that the final report of the just-concluded National Conference would be subjected to due legislative process.
