Ebola: Outbreak could take at least 6 months to bring under control In West Africa - President, Doctors Without Borders

A recent report released by a Medical Charity- Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF)- has postulated that the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in West Africa will take at least six months to bring under control.

Speaking in Geneva, MSF President Joanne Lui called for an increase in international co-ordination to tackle the disease that has claimed over a thousand lives.

Ms Lui said “In terms of timeline, we’re not talking in terms of weeks, we’re talking in terms of months.
We need a commitment for months, at least I would say six months, and I’m being, I would say, very optimistic.

” Ms Lui also called for more action from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in particular.

It is worth noting that the WHO earlier said that the scale of the outbreak of Ebola appeared to be “vastly underestimated”. Adding “extraordinary measures” were needed.

The WHO added “Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak

.” It further went to reassure that “WHO is co-ordinating a massive scaling up of the international response.”
