Director General National Identity Management Commission Mr Chris Onyemenam

National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), says it is doing everything possible to meet the December 31, 2014 deadline for closure of the Nigerian identity number registration.

Director General, NIMC Chris Onyemenam, told a meeting of stakeholders and members of the diplomatic community in Abuja that “the commission currently registers 30,000 Nigerians weekly and plans to meet the target of registering 100,000 citizens weekly by 2014.

“So far the commission has registered more than one million Nigerians in the ongoing enrolment. The commission has created a database that would allow other agencies of government access to information on all Nigerians. The new national identity card is 100 per cent polycarbonate and had protection against tampering and counterfeiting.

“NIMC is has presently making moves in bringing out a blueprint to capture Nigerians in Diaspora, as the commission is seeks partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to achieve this feat.” Onyemenam stated.

The DG added that although the commission cannot travel round the world, it would collaborate with foreign missions to achieve a wide coverage of the project.

He solicited the support of the diplomatic missions in Nigeria in the incorporation of the NIMC identity verification component into visa issuance.

According to him, the card also has seven layers with different features fused together without adhesives.

He said the card would serve as identification for the holders in the National Health Insurance Scheme, driver’s licence, pension, bank transactions, and immigration purposes, among others.

Onyemenam said the current exercise also had the capacity to capture the data of 200 million people.”

Martins Uhoumoibhi, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lauded the NIMC project and said that the project would further strengthen efforts to secure the country against terrorist activities.
