Doctors Without Borders Join Ebola Fight In Port Harcourt

 

  

Attempts to contain and stop the Ebola virus in Port Harcourt, Rivers state have been boosted as members of the humanitarian group ‘Medecins Sans Frontieres’ (MSF) aka 'Doctors Without Borders' are now in the oil-rich city.

The aid organization has been at the forefront of attempts to bring this year’s outbreak of the deadly disease under control.

The Nigerian Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu is reportedly also in Port Harcourt to visit the Ebola Isolation & Emergency Operation Centre in the city.

MSF has warned that the Ebola outbreak is being underestimated and that the battle to contain it is being lost.

Ribadu Steps down as Adamawa Governorship Aspirants.

Former Chairman of the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu will not be contesting the Adamawa governorship elections.

According to Premium Times, Ribadu and seven other aspirants have stepped down from the race after a closed door meeting with Senate President, David Mark, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja which reportedly lasted till the early hours of today, Friday, September 5, 2014.

Mark and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party, on whose platform the aspirants were set to contest, intervened to prevent crisis in the party over its choice of candidate for the elections, set to hold October 11. Continue..

A recent report has revealed that Chief James Ibori, the former governor of Delta State currently serving a jail term in the United Kingdom seeks to determine the choice of who becomes the governor after Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Atiku To Declare Presidential Ambition September 24

 

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar is set to contest the 2015 presidential elections.

Atiku will reportedly make a public declaration to this effect on Wednesday, September 24, 2014.

This was disclosed by his Media Adviser, Mallam Garba Shehu in a statement released today, Friday, September 5, 2014.

It reads:

 “The Turakin Adamawa will contest for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress, in the 2015 presidential elections.
“The former Vice President will be making the declaration on Wednesday, September 24.”

According to Punch, the former VP was quoted as saying:

“This is not about me, it is about our young people. It is about Nigerians. It is their future, not the past. It is about reforming government, securing the people and reconciling the nation,”

Atiku contested the 2007 presidential elections on the platform of the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) but lost to late former President Umaru Yar’adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

One in 10 girls sexually abused – UN

About 120 million girls around the world – slightly more than one in 10 – have been raped or sexually assaulted by the age of 20, a UN report says.

The children’s agency Unicef also says 95,000 children and teenagers – most of them in Latin America and the Caribbean – were murdered in 2012 alone.

It notes that children around the globe are routinely exposed to violence, including bullying.

Corpses Litter Streets Of Bama As Boko Haram Claim Victory

 

Bodies remain littered on the streets Bama two days after it was seized by militant Islamists, a lawmaker has told the BBC.

Boko Haram fighters were patrolling the streets of Bama, preventing people from burying the dead, Ahmed Zanna said.

Mr Zanna, a senator in Borno, said the humanitarian situation in Bama was "terrible" and there had been a "lot of killings" in the town.

"So many bodies litter the streets, and people are not allowed to even go and bury the dead ones. So the situation is getting worse and worse," Mr Zanna told the BBC's Newsday programme after speaking to a resident who fled the town.

Ebola a security threat – ECOWAS President

The President of ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Quedraogo, has described the Ebola Virus Disease epidemic as a security issue, saying it is not an issue for one country but a regional concern.

Speaking at the Health Partners Coordinating Committee meeting at the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja, Mr. Quedraogo said he took the opportunity of the high-level meeting of the coordinating body for bilateral and multilateral partnerships in Nigeria to pay a courtesy visit to the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu. One suicide every 40 seconds: WHO

Every 40 seconds someone in the world takes their own life, a global tally of more than 800,000 suicides a year, according to a landmark United Nations report on the subject.

The research found that suicide killed more people each year than conflicts and natural catastrophes, accounting for more than half of the world's 1.5 million violent deaths annually, World Health Organization staff told reporters at its presentation in Geneva.

The report, the U.N agency's first on the subject, analyzed data on suicides from 172 countries, and took a decade to compile.

Setting a goal to cut national suicide rates by 10 percent by 2020, the organization said suicide was a major but preventable health problem that health authorities had failed to adequately address due to a number of complicated factors. See Landmarks after the cut…

N50m Goods Perish As Fire Razes Onitsha Market

 

Traders at the Bright Street section of Onitsha Main Market are now counting their losses, following last Tuesday night fire that gutted goods worth millions of naira at the market.

The fire, according to a source, started at about 9.45 pm on the first floor of one of the storey buildings and destroyed some warehouses which were allegedly stocked with rice, chemicals and other spiritual materials worth over N50 million.

The source, however, noted that the inferno did not affect other shops located on the ground floor.

One of the eye-witnesses, Mike Okongwu, said when the fire started at that odd hour, a vigilante man guarding the area saw smoke coming out from one of the shops when it became unbearable, he alerted the chairman of the street traders, Ifeanyi Chukwudum (Ifetex), who immediately contacted the police for a dispatch of some policemen to the scene. A Federal High Court has temporarily frozen at least 20 accounts belonging to Sani Dangote, a brother to billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, over his alleged failure to pay a N5.2 billion obtained from Union Bank.

Ohio mother fatally shoots young sons, then kills herself - Police

A southwestern Ohio mother fatally shot her two young sons and then took her own life, police said on Wednesday.

Rachel Johnson, 32, and her 7-year-old son, Daylan, were found dead by her husband when he came to the house on Wednesday morning to pick the boys up for school, Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody said.

Ayden Johnson, 10, was critically wounded and died at a Dayton hospital, Moody said. Springfield is located about 25 miles northeast of Dayton.

"This is a tragedy for this community this morning and for this family," Moody said.

Moody would not say where the bodies were found, or what type of weapon was used. He said that Johnson and her husband were separated at the time of the shooting and had spoken the night before the three were found.

An autopsy for the three family members, who all had gunshot wounds, is scheduled for Thursday, Clark County coroner's investigator, Mike Haytas, said.

Counselors, psychologists and a therapy dog were at schools in the Springfield School District on Wednesday to help other students, according to superintendent David Estrop.

WHO issues warning over Ebola in Port Harcourt (Must Read)

An Ebola outbreak in Nigeria’s oil producing hub of Port Harcourt could spread wider and faster than in the financial capital, Lagos, the World Health Organization warned on Thursday. 

The UN health body said the arrival of the virus in Port Harcourt, which is 435 kilometres (270 miles) east of Lagos, showed “multiple high-risk opportunities for transmission of the virus to others”.

The haemorrhagic fever, which has hit five countries in West Africa and caused nearly 2,000 deaths this year, first arrived in Nigeria when a Liberian finance ministry official died in Lagos on July 25. Continue

Another Ebola victim dies in P-Harcourt

 

The Nigerian Ministry of Health has announced the death of another Ebola patient in Port Harcourt. The victim is said to be an elderly woman who contracted the deadly virus while on admission in the same hospital where late Dr Enemoah died. Chukwu: Ebola Status Remains Two

Health Minister, Professor Chukwu Wednesday disclosed  that the status of Ebola Virus in the country remains two patients  who are  receiving treatment.

One of the patients is  in Lagos  while the other is  in  Port Harcourt.

According to him, since the outbreak of the deadly disease in the country, a total of 18 persons were  infected, out of which 14 were in Lagos and 4 in Port Harcourt.

The minister made the disclosure while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly FEC meeting. Continue

According to Mr. Dan Nwomeh, the Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Minister of Health. All primary and secondary schools in the country, previously asked to remain closed till October 13th may re-open from Sept 15 as last Ebola contacts under surveillance may be freed from quarantine by then.
