ECOWAS: West African leaders hold talks in Ghana over insecurity in Nigeria, Mali

West African leaders are to hold an extraordinary meeting Friday, in Accra, Ghana, to discuss the degenerating security situation in Nigeria and Mali where Islamists militants have launched intense attacks in the last one month.

A meeting of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, will also allow the leaders brainstorm on other issues of mutual and urgent concern in the sub-region.

The one-day summit is the first to be hosted by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama since his election in February 2014 as chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Community.

President Mahama would be expected to address the summit on the issues, while the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo would present memoranda on the security situations in the two member countries for consideration by members.

A statement on Thursday said the meeting was convened especially to enable member states deliberate on the security situations in Mali and Nigeria.

In Mali, Islamic separatists have held sway in the country’s desert north, clashing repeatedly with sate forces.

Nigeria has also come under increased attacks from Islamists group, Boko Haram, which has killed over 12,000 people since 2009.

The insecurity in the two countries have threatened to spill into the larger West African sub-region.

The meeting became necessary following the latest clashes between rebel groups in Kidal, northern Mali and government forces, which resulted in the loss of several lives, with thousands of people suffering displaced.

The agenda of the meeting showed that the regional leaders would also discuss the security situation in parts of northern Nigeria where the militant group, Boko Haram has waged a terrorist campaign that has left many people dead, wanton destruction of property and kidnappings of innocent cititzens, including children.

Boko Haram has in the last 47 days abducted more than 250 school girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State.

One of the attacked Emirs Reportedly dies

There were reports earlier today that two prominent Borno State Emirs, the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrissa Timta (pictured left) and Emir of Uba Alhaji Ali Ibn Ismaila Mamza (pictured right) were kidnapped by Boko Haram men while on their way to Gombe to attend the burial of Emir of Gombe, Shehu Abubakar.
According to Daily Trust, one of the Emirs, Alhaji Idrissa Timta has died.

Security sources said he died of heart attack while fleeing into the bush after gunmen attacked their vehicle and fired several shots which forced it to stop. Continue...

“Already, arrangement is being made to bring his corpse to Gwoza from Shafa. His corpse was found in the bush,” a source said.

The Emir of Uba, Alhaji Idrissa Timta, who is younger, escaped while many of the people in their entourage have been reportedly abducted by the attackers.

It was gathered that most of the vehicles in the convoy have been set ablaze.

PDP Chairman Muazu Denies Borno State SSG Claims Over Chibok Abduction

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, has refuted a claim by the Secretary to the State Government of Borno State, Ambassador Baba Ahmed, in which he denied the government was advised against WAEC or NECO examinations outside Maiduguri.

In a statement on the SSG’s interview with SaharaReporters yesterday, he said Ambassador Ahmed’s denial of a letter of advice from the Federal Ministry of Education dvising his government not to conduct the examination outside of Maiduguri, was “a clear acceptance of the lopsided approach by the Government in Borno State to fight insurgency in the area.”

He said that as an elder statesman and a stakeholder in this administration, he wanted to restate that for Nigeria to win the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, everyone must close ranks irrespective of party affiliations and heed popular advice from any agency of the government to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

“We owe our people the collective duty to protect and provide for them and we wish to once again advise the Government and stakeholders in Borno State and indeed all Nigerians to cooperate and stop this spate of violence,” the statement said.

“As we celebrate 15 uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, we wish to call again on all Nigerians to join hands with President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR to continue to build the #NigeriaOfOurDream as there is no alternative to democracy. Our mandate is transformation and transformation is on course. Nigeria is one, nothing can divide us.”
